Welcome Letter from Past President Susan Tilly The Alaska Icelandic Horse Association came together due to a common need and a love for Icelandic horses. Alaska is a large state with about 130 Icelandic horses spread across its great mass. Icelandic Horses were a new idea to many of the owners who found themselves alone, short on information concerning the care and needs of our new four-legged friends, and wanting contact with other owners in their same situation. A simple way to share knowledge and support one another was to publish an Icelandic newsletter. The newsletter needed a base, so on April 26, 2001, the Alaska Icelandic Horse Association was formed. Our mission statement is: To preserve the uniqueness and the integrity of the Icelandic Horse. The objectives of AIHA are to promote the Icelandic Horse breed, educate its membership and the public about the breed, and provide an environment of support for owners and riders wherein they can enjoy the talents and characteristics of the Icelandic Horse. Members enjoy their horses in a variety of ways. Some have developed breeding programs, some have become trainers and certified Icelandic judges, some show, and some trail ride. All are willing to trade information and horsekeeping tidbits, especially considering our cold climate and harsh conditions. Through the exchange of information in our newsletters, photos, clinics, trail rides, shows and casual gatherings, our club’s main purpose still remains: enjoying and caring for our fuzzy, friendly, very unique little horses. Phone calls or emails are welcomed, and information about our breed is happily shared. The club was organized under the umbrella of the United States Icelandic Horse Congress. |
